Correct tire inflation. Lose 4% of your mileage for every
5 psi of underinflation. Every 10% underinflation also increases
tire tread wear by 15%. However, do not over-inflate! Over-inflation
leads to tire wear too.
Align steering and wheels. Driving in a straight line
instead of wobbling from side to side improves mileage and
reduce tire and component wear-and-tear.
Every m.p.h. above 55: One percent loss in fuel economy.
Ignore "As Seen on TV" additives or products.
Little to no benefits are scientifically proven.
Warm-up for only 30 seconds. Modern engines require
only 30 seconds of warm up. Also, don't idle your engine for
more than one minute. It takes more fuel to idle a car for
60 seconds than to restart the engine.
Close windows and use the "fresh air" feature
or turn on the A/C on the freeway. Using the sunroof or opening
windows at high speeds can reduce mileage by 8%.
Conserve momentum. Decelerate/accelerate smoothly
by anticipating merging traffic and stoplights. It takes 600%
more gas to move a car from a stop than a car that is already
moving at a few mph's.
Use cruise control when on long stretches of road
to keep speed constant.
